A G/L account migration creates the account definition that SAP needs for posting and reporting. A G/L balance migration transfers the financial value, and sometimes open or line-item detail, as of an agreed key date. They are connected, but they are not the same task. If the account does not exist with the required company-code settings, the balance has nowhere valid to post. If the account exists but the balance is missing or wrong, the structure may look complete while the financial statements do not reconcile.

The Galal Academy demonstration uses the SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit and starts with the FI - G/L accounts migration object. Object names, available fields and screens can differ by release and deployment, so confirm them in the migration object documentation for your target system.

A simple illustrative example

Assume a fictional company is preparing these two source records:

The first record describes what account 110000 is: its chart-of-accounts and company-code data, account type, currency, field-status behavior and other required settings. The second describes how much value it carries at the cutover point. Loading EUR 125,000 does not create a well-designed master record, and creating the master record does not populate EUR 125,000.

Sequence the work

  1. Freeze the intended scope and key date. Identify the relevant company codes, ledgers and currencies.
  2. Map source accounts to the target chart of accounts. Resolve duplicates, obsolete accounts and consolidation choices before loading.
  3. Migrate and validate G/L account master data. Check both chart-level and company-code-level attributes.
  4. Prepare balances and any supported open-item detail for the selected migration object and release.
  5. Simulate, correct the cause of each message, and then migrate.
  6. Reconcile target values to the signed-off source totals using the same scope, currency and key date.

The Migration Cockpit may also identify predecessor objects for a selected object. Treat that dependency list as part of planning, not as a promise that every prerequisite is correctly configured or populated.

Validate master data separately

For each migrated account, confirm that the account exists in the intended chart and company code, that its type and currency are correct, and that posting controls match the approved design. A successful technical load is not enough: test whether the account behaves as expected in the controlled test process. Do not repair a balance problem by changing account design unless evidence shows the design is the cause.

Validate financial values separately

Build a compact worksheet with source account, target account, debit or credit sign, transaction currency, company-code currency, target balance and variance. The total migration-clearing position should be checked as part of the financial migration control. SAP's on-premise documentation explains that the Migration Cockpit transfers data through release-specific migration objects, so use the object documentation in the target system when defining the control population.

Common mistakes

Quick decision checklist

If the question is “Does account 110000 exist and behave correctly?”, start with master data. If it is “Why is the bank total different after cutover?”, start with balance reconciliation. If both are wrong, correct and validate the master-data foundation before repeating the financial load.

Next, work through the G/L balance migration demonstration and apply the reconciliation sequence to the same chart and company-code scope.

FAQ

Does migrating the G/L account also migrate its balance? No. Treat the account definition and its value as separate controlled work packages.

Should every account be loaded as detailed line items? No. The supported and required detail depends on the account, business requirement and migration object.

Where can I verify the cockpit behavior? See SAP Help on the on-premise Migrate Your Data app and confirm the migration-object documentation for your release.
