OVA8 connects an SD transaction to its automatic credit-control behavior. It is where the combination of organizational and risk information leads to a reaction when SAP Credit Management returns a negative result.

The important question is not only whether the credit check fails. It is what the sales process is allowed to do next.

SAP OVA8 Credit Control: Warning, Block or Error

Where OVA8 fits in the process

An SD document determines a credit control area, credit account and risk class. Its document type and processing stage determine a credit group. SAP uses that combination to find the applicable automatic credit-control settings.

The business partner's check rule then evaluates the configured checks in SAP Credit Management. OVA8 controls the SD-side activation and response.

This is why an OVA8 problem cannot always be solved inside OVA8. Missing payer, risk class, credit control area or segment mapping can prevent the expected combination from being reached.

Warning behavior

A warning informs the user about the negative credit result but can allow the document to be saved. SAP records the credit status, enabling follow-on processing to respect the block where configured.

Warnings are useful when the organization wants the sales order captured while preventing an uncontrolled delivery or other subsequent step. They also give the credit team a document to review and release.

Do not assume that “saved” means “approved.” Inspect the overall credit status and the status of follow-on documents.

Error behavior

An error prevents the document from being created or saved when the check fails. This is a stronger control, appropriate when policy prohibits recording the transaction in that state.

SAP's current settings for credit check distinguishes warning from error: a warning can save the document with a credit status, while an error stops creation when the check is negative.

Choose this deliberately because it changes the user's recovery path. With an error, the underlying master data, limit or policy condition must change before the document can be saved.

Block and follow-on processing

A credit block is not simply a popup message. It is a status that should prevent specified follow-on processing until an authorized decision is made.

The organization should define:

SAP notes that SD credit checks apply at sales-order or delivery stages, including post goods issue where configured; billing documents do not undergo the same credit check.

Credit groups and document activation

Document type configuration assigns the credit check and credit group. Standard process designs commonly distinguish order, delivery and goods-issue stages.

Confirm the relevant OVAK or OVAD settings and ensure that the check type supported for SAP Credit Management is used. Then verify the OVA8 entry for the exact credit control area, risk class and credit group combination.

A frequent troubleshooting error is to inspect the order combination while the problem occurs at delivery. The credit group may differ.

Practical test cases

Build a compact matrix with a controlled business partner:

Capture the messages, credit status and application log for each case. This proves the process rather than only the configuration screen.

Common reasons OVA8 appears ineffective

If an order saves without the expected reaction, verify:

If the document is blocked unexpectedly, start with the failed check step and exposure rather than changing the reaction to a warning.

Design the response around governance

The right reaction depends on risk appetite and operating model. High-value orders may require hard prevention, while lower-risk cases may be saved and routed to a credit manager.

Whatever the choice, document it, restrict release authorization and measure how often users encounter blocks. Repeated manual release can reveal weak master data, unrealistic limits or a rule that does not match policy.
