Place the LSMW lessons in context
The LSMW demonstrations remain useful for understanding mappings, conversion rules, files, sessions, and error analysis. For example, when a blank source field must not overwrite the target, use the source-not-initial condition; after changing that mapping, reconvert the source data before retesting or creating the session. These lessons do not make LSMW the universal recommended migration route for SAP S/4HANA.
SAP identifies Migration Cockpit as the tool of choice for SAP S/4HANA initial migration and says LSMW use is restricted, not recommended, and at the customer's responsibility. First check for a supported cockpit object and interface in your exact release.
- Do not assume an SAP ERP recording, direct-input program, BAPI, or IDoc remains valid in SAP S/4HANA.
- Document the reason, owner, testing, controls, and support position for any exception tool.
- Never treat a successful batch session as business sign-off.
Close with evidence
For every object, preserve source control totals, extracted counts, rejected records, loaded counts, target totals, and approved differences. Reconcile balances and subledgers to the general ledger, then obtain business-owner approval before opening production processing.
The final question is not whether the load ran. It is whether the target starts with complete, accurate, explainable data and a traceable audit trail.
